Blacksmith Jack Miller Features At SSCC's Meet The Artist Event

SARDINIA -- During the 2008-09 academic year, the South Campus of Southern State Community College will be exhibiting several works from local artists each month. The second exhibit, which runs Oct. 22-Nov. 21, 2008, features local artist Jack Miller. The public is invited to meet the artist from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.

Miller is a self-taught blacksmith artist dedicated to keeping alive and promoting the ancient art of blacksmithing. His specialty is hand-hammer forged and manipulated hot steel, gravitating toward colonial style wrought iron. Miller designs his own work including candleholders, fireplace accessories, tools and axes. He is a member of the Appalachian Artisans Guild, Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil and The Artist Blacksmith Association of Northern America.

Southern State Community College, being in the heart of Appalachian Ohio, sponsors many exhibits and events that are held in both the Appalachian Gateway Center and the Appalachian Resources Center, which is a part of the Learning Resources Center and library. Hours of operation during fall quarter are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

The exhibits are provided by the Appalachian Resources Center, located in the Learning Resources Center at the college’s south campus. For more information, visit www.sscc.edu or contact either Mary Ayres or Peggy Chalker at 1-800-628-7722. The LRC also maintains an active blog at http://lrc-staff-news.blogspot.com.
