Buford Scott, N4EEO is SK

If you ever hung around 3898 you frequently heard the voice of Buford "Scotty" Scot, N4EEO. He was a jewel and will be missed. For many years Scotty was the unofficial host of the Northern Kentucky Hamfest and often provided the gathering with warm fried chicken, cold cold watermelon and a great smile. Scotty died from a heart attack on January 1, 2006.

The Killer is SK

I received a phone call today, December 17, 2005, from KJ8I informing me that Gene Corbin, WA4KZE ("The Killer") passed away. Gene was an early member of the 3898 crew and long time participant in the various trader nets that have been held on 75 meters. He was a retired plumber and proud grandfather. I hadn't spoken to Gene for several years but was aware that he suffered with advanced emphysema. His passing, along with those of many other 98'ers, will forever leave a void in amateur radio.

BUDDY & RITA TEAGUE, CHRISTMAS 2005

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FROM A.C., N4SVD
Hey OM,

What are you Two up to?? I been wondering about y'all. I think of you and Larry often and a number of the others on occasion as well. I remember Buddy Teague when he got his Automatic Swimming Pool Cleaner operating and he got the wits scared out of him one nite while he and his wife were out for a romantic moonlight swim while his kids were gone to a ballgame. If you talk to him sometime, ask him about it??

Also, I remember the gentleman that always had a 90th birthday no matter where we were eating at and we could always count on a piece of his birthday cake for dessert. I believe he had a Rooster tattooed on the calf of his right leg and I do remember what he used to say to the girls about it.

AC Fulcher Santa.jpg (53876 bytes)I remember Larry and his booths at Dayton in the bone yard and going by his place after the Dayton Hamfest was over and then coming to your humble abode as well. And another gentleman that took me thru the "LARGE ENGINE" manufacturing plant where he worked which I believe was "VSI" or some 3 letter name which I can't recall at the moment. And another gentleman who bought up all the Kenwood 7950's at Dayton one year and sold a boat load of them before Sunday afternoon. And how about "KBee-4bee-Obee-JayBee"? Where's he at?? And Father Marshee!! Wow, A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. Those were the good old days!! Shuck-N-Shack, Spaghetti Warehouse, and the Olive Gardens.

Well guys, I'm out here in the Victorville/Apple Valley, CA. area just cruizin' around on old Route 66 and enjoying the desert. I'm flying to Houston and Birmingham on Friday for 2 weeks and then I'll return to CA and continue my RV'n lifestyle which I've been lucky to maintain for the past 14 years thanks to a CSX Railroad settlement which I greatly deserved. I'm continuing another 14 years if I'm able!! Hey, somebody's got to do it!! It might as well be me!! I'm still active on HF on 40 meters and sometimes on 75 but I can be reached with emails anytime if you send one to n4svd at yahoo.com . I'll return the email if anyone cares to send a photo or just wants to send me an email for old times sake.

I'll definitely check out Larry's Website as I have in the past as I enjoy the photos and I hope you two and some of the others will stay in touch from time to time. Who knows, we may want to meet at the "Shuck-n-Shack" one of these days and talk about old times!!

Do you ever remember getting locked up in a "Porta-Pottie" in Dayton???? I DO!!!! :) Grin...............

By the way, "Happy Holidays to ALL the 3898 Gang" (Past, Present and Future members) and I refer to ALL the members of the 3898 Gang as "Gentleman" because no one ever told A.C. to "Get the Hell out of here"!!

Dayton, 2005

I hadn't been to the Dayton Hamvention in at least ten years. Like ham radio in general, I'd just lost interest. The few times I did give it a thought, the date had come and gone. This year, however, it entered my mind before the event and I gave KJ8I a call and arranged to ride up with him on Saturday.

We hadn't been there ten minutes before I purchased a Kenwood TS-830 with a matching speaker. The idea was to set it up with a coat hanger antenna and just listen around a little to see if I wanted to buy back into the hobby.

The longer I sat there the more convinced I was that I wasn't ready so I set it on Bill's table and sold the station to a fellow from Puerto Rico. Used the proceeds to buy a new 17" LCD monitor for my desktop.

Ran into a number of old friends including Marv Buntain, Greg Lowrey, Jack and Mark Housman, Bobby Doll and Lee Toppins. I spent the most time with Lee and his grandson Mike. He and I had been to a ton of hamfests and Daytons together and had lots of stories to retell. It was great fun.

Stopped in and talked to Dan from the Ham Station and learned that Paul Marsha wasn't able to make it to Dayton this year because a conflict with some medical tests. Sorry to have missed "the Father."

Dayton has certainly changed since I was there last. Number of flea market spaces greatly reduced and even more shocking, the number that sat empty. I'd guess that a third of all the spaces were unoccupied.

On the inside the same was the case. Fewer venders set up in smaller spaces and more space sitting vacant.

The crowds were also smaller and that made getting around the inside much easier and more enjoyable.

Don't know what the answer is, but Dayton may be headed the direction of the Dodo bird if those who run it can't turn it around. Of course, the same is true about ham radio!

Here's a little information from Lee Toppins, WD8ADX. Check out the photos of Lee and his grandson Mike. Some of you may remember "Mikey" when he was just a little boy and would come to hamfest with Lee as well as talk on 3898 while sitting on his granddad's knee.

"Hi everybody. No, I am not dead, just busy working at shop and around here. Haven't turned radio on for a while. Here are some pictures of Mike and me at the Mad River Steam and Tractor show this summer. We had a lot of fun and also won a trophy in the tractor rodeo, but I forgot to take camera. Take care. Hi Larry,

I just thought you'd like to know what the elevation is in Paoli, CO. is. Interesting, huh?? The Picture of my Motorhome on the highway was taken near Riudoso, New Mexico. Of course, the other photo is just something I dreamed up!! We're presently in Cheyenne, Wyoming but plan to leave next week for Cody, Wyoming and then on to Glacier National Park in Montana. Have a nice day!!

Ten-Tec 2000 @ Sevierville, Tennessee

On October 6-7, 2000 the Ten-Tec Company sponsored a small hamfest at their plant in Sevierville, Tn. It was an attempt to bring together the people who so much enjoyed the original Sevierville hamfest that once occurred at the school across the street. They opened their plant for tours on both days and on Saturday a good number of tailgaters peddled their wares in the parking lot. Ten-Tec took advantage of the situation by allowing hams to have hands on experiences with their new additions to the line. They displayed their new HF rig, the Jupiter, based on the highly successful Pegasus. Also of interest was their new Titan II amplifier and RX-340 commercial receiver.

Here's a few photos of some of ham radio's best known and accomplished bottom feeders: L-R are K8GWM Charlie "The Porker" Lawhorn, WQ4E Bobby Doll , KE4SI Bob "Excess to My Needs" Johnson and WA4LM Leonard Massey.

One of the last and largest Dayton gatherings held by the crew of 3898 in 1992. We preceded the Hamvention with a tour of the now defunct Voice of America facility between Dayton and Cincinnati. Following the tour we met at the nearby home of Jack (WB8BFS). Here's a few photos...

Back when the earth was green winter Fridays began with the Gator Races on 3895. Jack, WB8BFS, acted as master of ceremonies from his shack in Knoxville, Tennessee. On a count Jack would invite participants to turn "all knobs to the right" and dumb their call signs in ala DX pileup style. Heats were ran and the three strongest signals in each were decided. There would have been no way to measure the total amount of RF energy wasted during these heats but the noise volume was enormous. However, as loud as it may have been you could still hear the signal of WB8BFS rise above all others and announce that the heat was over and who had won. The answer to "why could Jack be heard above all others?" lies in the three photos above. These are photos (courtesy of Theo, K4MO) of one of the most famous of all homebrews, The Atom Smasher. Built by WB8BFS it ran 7.5Kv on the plate and had a tube with handles. One of the things that made it so memorable to me was that it was the only signal that could totally blank out the Hickory Hemorrhoid. It could have been called The Hemorrhoid Smasher!

Amplifiers are a constant topic on 3898 and one of the most discussed amps of several years ago was Advanced Radio Design's ARD-230. It was designed in part by a couple of Ohio hams and manufactured in Virginia. If I believe it ran a pair of Eimac 3CX800A7 tubes, was digital and could be remotely controlled. Jeff, W8CQ, sent me several photos of one he purchased and rebuilt. I recall the price tag being quite high and therefore it was never popular. This is the only one I've ever seen that actually made it into some hams station. I don't know who owned it first but former 3898er Bob Crews, KJ4CQ, once owned this one.

The Microsoft Terraserver is the more difficult of the two but allows the user to zoom in closer to the ground. It would help you to know your exact lat. & long. before visiting. All that Global Explorer requires is your street address.

I've known Marv Buntain for many years and his call is KA8RQE. Then the sob went and changed it to some dead person call and screwed up my brain. Anyway, here's Marv's shack and, as always, it's neat as a pin! Hey, Marv!

Before the birth of America there has been a question about the genetic make up of those who settled in what we know today as West Virginia. Jokes and stories abound about incest in their population. Well, I suppose this settles the matter for good. A picture speaks a thousand words. From L-R we have Jeff (KA8WAM), Jeff's dad "Big WAM" and Jeff's two brothers, "Slim WAM: and "Bambi WAM".

It always amazed me that while being one of the nation's poorest states, West Virginia had a gold covered dome atop it's state capital building in Charleston. While headed South this past week I stopped long enough to take a photo of the dome. I immediately noticed something weird about the apex of the dome. It seemed there was a strange, but still familiar, image on top the spire. I installed my telephoto lens and got a block or two closer and damn was I shocked. Click the dome to see what I saw...!

Besides making quite a name for himself on Amateur Radio over the years, Jimmy Binion KI4EV is also making some in roads to fame in cyberspace. Participants of eBay have developed intimate knowledge of Jimmy since he attempted to sell this teapot through the online auction service. Within minutes the teapot skyrocketed to "hot item" status and finally sold for well over $2,000. Click photo to enlarge.
